The need

Most of what goes wrong in an emergency was decided before it began. Who coordinates, what is stored where, which institution answers to which. Communities recovering from one disaster are often left to face the next one with the same gaps.

Who benefits

  • Local governments and civil protection agencies
  • Universities and research groups working on risk reduction
  • Companies and foundations that want to invest in readiness, not only relief
  • Communities recovering from a recent disaster

What CMAX brings

CMAX Foundation convenes the institutions that will respond together, documents needs directly with affected communities, and helps turn that work into concrete resources. Between 2017 and 2019 this took the form of an emergency research fund, a public-private network for disaster risk reduction in Mexico, and the first Social Innovation Lab for Emergencies with Universidad de Monterrey.

How to take part

  1. Invite CMAX Foundation to convene institutions in your city or region
  2. Support research on emergency needs with a specific community
  3. Partner as a university, company or public agency

Documented work

  • Emergency Research CMAX Fund (2017). A fund created to research emergency assistance solutions with direct input from affected communities.
  • Social Innovation Lab for Emergencies, LISE (2018). Created with Universidad de Monterrey. Its first workshop, "Innovation for prevention: strategic planning in earthquakes", took place in Oaxaca on 16 and 17 July 2018, after the September 2017 earthquakes. See the case record.
  • Public-private network for disaster risk reduction, Mexico (2019). A private-sector alliance for disaster resilience launched in January 2019. See the case record.

What this program is not

CMAX Foundation does not run a standing training curriculum. Workshops and convenings are listed individually, with dates and participants, so that each one can be verified.
