Social Innovation Lab for Emergencies (LISE)

Documented

Oaxaca and Mexico CityJuly 2018CMAX Foundation with partners

With Universidad de Monterrey, CMAX Foundation created the first Social Innovation Lab for Emergencies. Its first workshop, on strategic planning in earthquakes, took place in Oaxaca on 16 and 17 July 2018.

Context

The September 2017 earthquakes left communities in Oaxaca and central Mexico facing reconstruction and the certainty of future seismic events. Prevention planning was needed as much as rebuilding.

What the Foundation and partners did

CMAX Foundation and Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM) created the Laboratorio de Innovación Social para la Emergencia (LISE), a collaborative initiative designed to involve up to 25 organizations and help citizens become agents of change. The lab works in four phases (research, workshop, feasibility, implementation). Its first workshop, "Innovation for prevention: strategic planning in earthquakes", was held in Oaxaca on 16 and 17 July 2018.

Confirmed results

  • First LISE workshop held in Oaxaca, 16–17 July 2018

How the lab works

  1. Research. Examine the social problem objectively: strengths, weaknesses, resources and best practices.
  2. Workshop. Around 30 multidisciplinary participants from different sectors develop approaches to an urgent challenge.
  3. Feasibility. Projects are evaluated for viability, with analysis that investors and funding institutions can use.
  4. Implementation. Toolkits help clarify goals and manage practical problems while a project is adopted.

The doing is the new saying. We can talk much, but what we really need is many people taking action.
