Methodology & data table

The six categories behind UNHCR’s published headline: refugees under UNHCR’s mandate, asylum-seekers, internally displaced people, other people in need of international protection, other groups of concern, and Palestine refugees under UNRWA’s mandate, which UNHCR reports as a separate series. Stateless people are excluded, because statelessness is a legal status rather than displacement and those who have been displaced are already counted. Internal displacement covers UNHCR operations. Historical figures may be revised. Data is fetched on the server and refreshed daily.
